BrakeController.com's FAQ

What is a 2nd generation control? A second generation control is the factories 2nd attempt or enhanced version of the original. Generally these brake controllers have digital displays, memory settings, and sleeker looks.

What happened to inertia controls? Inertia controls have been replaced by proportional controls and yes there is a difference. Inertia controls used a pendulum or mercury switch to determine the vehicles deceleration. They had a slower reaction time and needed an extreme amount of patience leveling the controls. With the introduction of the accelerometer this technology is no longer needed. An accelerometer is a laser instrument that measures g-force.

What is the difference between a single axis and tri axis accelerometer? A single axis accelerometer can determine forward and reverse, a tri axis accelerometer can determine forward/reverse, left/rigt, up/down.

Why would I need a tri-axis accelerometer? If you ever go off road or through mountains you know that not everything is forward and reverse.

What makes the MaxBrake different from the proportional controls? The MaxBrake ties into your mastercylinder with a pressure sensor that tells the brake control what level to apply the trailer brakes, this allows 100% synchronization of your truck and trailer brakes. The proportional controls piggy back on the vehicle and try to mimic how your vehicle is stopping.

Why are some controls not electric/hydraulic compatible? This is up to the factory, we follow thier instructions. If they say it can't then so do we. It really comes down to the electric over hydraulic actuator you are using. Some are compatible with all brake controls while others work with some. The motherboard of the electric/hydraulic are always not compatible with some brake control technologies. Therefore some manufacturers simply say they will not work.

Why have you stopped carrying some models? We take brake controllers seriously and only want to show the best controls on the market. If we feel the control serves no purpose or is outdated it no longer has a place on our site.

Why don't you list my GM/Chevy 07-09? GM made a decision to remove the plugin feature from their vehicles.

Why should I buy my brake controller from brakecontroller.com? There are many outlets that sell brake controls. Generally they get hitched to one popular brand or another and try to offer the lowest price to attract business, this is not our intention. Southwest Wheel (brakecontroller.com) is a recognized industry leader in truck, trailer, and towing product industry, we provide the complete product, warranty, express service, and piece of mind. Why buy a direct plug in control and not the plug and bracket. The price you see is the price you pay.

So the more expensive the control is the better it is? Not always, some manufacturers have greater followings than others. They can charge more because of their name.
